Why does my circuit breaker keep tripping?
Breakers trip to protect the wiring: either too much is running on the circuit (an overload), a hot wire is touching neutral or ground (a short or ground fault), or the breaker itself is failing.
How do I know my electrical panel needs replacing?
Plan on replacing a panel that is over 30 years old, out of breaker spaces, rusted, warm to the touch, showing scorch marks, or made by Federal Pacific (Stab-Lok), Zinsco or Challenger.
My house has knob-and-tube wiring. Does it have to be replaced?
It isn't automatically illegal, but it's worth replacing. Knob-and-tube has no ground, was never designed for today's loads, and its insulation becomes brittle after nearly a century. Many insurers won't cover a home that still has active knob-and-tube.
My basement flooded. Is my electrical system safe?
Assume it isn't until it's checked. Keep the power to flooded areas off, don't touch panels, outlets or appliances that were under water, and have an electrician inspect before re-energizing.
What do I need for a home EV charger?
A Level 2 charger needs a dedicated 240-volt circuit, typically 40 to 60 amps, and enough spare capacity in your panel to support it.
